Communicable Diseases

A communicable disease is a disease that passes between people or animals. People sometimes refer to communicable diseases as "infectious" or "transmittable."

A communicable disease can have a large impact on a population if infected individuals do not obtain the treatment they need or do not take the necessary steps to prevent the disease from spreading to other people.

Role of the Communicable Disease Team

To protect the public's health and to prevent disease outbreaks, the Union County Public Health Communicable Disease (CD) Team maintains surveillance on over 80 different diseases. The State of North Carolina determines which diseases must be reported to and monitored by the local Public Health Department.

When unusual numbers of cases are reported, the CD Team conducts an investigation to locate the original source of the outbreak and then takes steps to stop the disease from spreading further.
